4 Pupils Feared Dead as School Latrine Collapses in Queen of Angels Academy
Four pupils are feared dead after a pit latrine at Queen of Angels Primary School in Uasin Gishu County suddenly collapsed during morning hours, disrupting what was meant to be a normal school day.
Turbo Sub-County Police Commander Peter Wekesa confirmed the distressing incident, stating that a rescue team had been immediately deployed to search for the missing children. According to Wekesa, three learners were pulled out alive from the debris, though their condition remains unclear, while four others were still unaccounted for amid fears they might have perished.
“We are digging through the rubble to determine whether there are any children still trapped underneath,” Wekesa said, noting that more information would be made available once the operation concluded.
Initial reports suggest the collapse occurred just as learners visited the latrine block before beginning their daily lessons. Those rescued were rushed to nearby medical facilities for emergency treatment.
Authorities have launched investigations to establish what led to the collapse of the facility, as concerns grow over the structural safety of sanitation blocks in public and private schools.
This tragic event draws painful parallels to a similar case earlier this year in March, when two students at Ramba Boys High School in Siaya County lost their lives after a septic tank they were standing on gave way. The Form Four learners were part of a group when the structure suddenly collapsed around 6 p.m.
Efforts by police and Kenya Red Cross officials resulted in an overnight rescue operation that unfortunately concluded with the recovery of two bodies. The incident sparked protests at the school, as students demanded accountability from the institution’s leadership, forcing a temporary two-week closure.
With this latest incident, calls are expected to intensify for a nationwide audit of school infrastructure—particularly sanitation facilities—amid fears that poor maintenance and oversight may be putting young lives at risk.
