2025 Political Events to Watch in Kenya and Africa
The year 2025 will be marked by significant political events both in Kenya and across the region.
One of the key events Kenyans will focus on is the African Union Commission (AUC) election in February, where former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is vying for the chairperson position.
Hereโs a summary of the key political events:
AUC Elections

In February 2025, African Union member states will vote to elect a new AUC chairperson. Raila, supported by Kenya, is aiming to replace Moussa Faki, whose term is ending.
His main competitor is Mahamoud Ali Youssouf from Djibouti, with Richard Randriamandrato from Madagascar also in the race.
The AUC Chairperson plays a crucial role, acting as the Chief Executive Officer, Legal Representative, and the Unionโs Accounting Officer, driving the African Union’s vision for a peaceful, integrated, and prosperous continent.
Rigathi Gachagua’s Announcement

Following his impeachment, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is expected to announce his next move in January.
He has been consulting with various stakeholders in the Mt Kenya region and plans to reveal the political direction for the region ahead of the 2027 elections.

Gachagua hinted that the political movement emerging from Mt Kenya in 2025 will rival the historic 2002 movement.
Kenyans will also be watching the progress of the petition challenging his impeachment.
Finance Bill 2025
The Finance Bill 2025 is anticipated to attract attention due to the heated debates over the 2024 bill.
Kenyans will particularly focus on proposed tax changes to fund the 2025/2026 national budget.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi revealed that the bill will be finalized by April and presented to the Cabinet before April 18, 2025, followed by submission to the National Assembly by April 29, 2025, for debate and public consultation.
