16 MPs Injured in Fiery Mombasa Road Crash
Sixteen Tanzanian lawmakers heading to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) games in Mombasa were involved in a road accident.
The Friday morning crash occurred when their bus reportedly lost control and collided with an oncoming lorry in the Mbande area of Dodoma.
Dodoma Regional Police Commander George Katabazi told Mwananchi, a Tanzanian news outlet, that the incident happened around 2 a.m.
Katabazi explained that the bus driver ignored a traffic alert and attempted to overtake another vehicle on a narrow road, resulting in a head-on collision.
The bus driver has since been arrested, Katabazi confirmed. Thankfully, the accident victims are in stable condition and are receiving treatment at the Benjamin Mkapa Hospital in Dodoma.
In a press briefing, Katabazi urged drivers to exercise caution when transporting passengers, especially during the festive season, to prevent accidents that could result in injuries or fatalities.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula stated that while no fatalities were recorded, some lawmakers sustained injuries.
Speaking from the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station in Nairobi, Wetangula assured the press that additional updates would be provided once the team reached Mombasa.
The 2024 East Africa Inter-Parliamentary Games are set to commence this Saturday, December 7, in Mombasa.
The National Assembly Joint Planning Committee, co-chaired by Vincent Kawaya of the Bunge Sports Club, revealed that teams are already warming up, and fans are arriving in anticipation of the games.
Parliamentarians from eight East African Community (EAC) member statesโKenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Somaliaโwill compete in eight sports: football, volleyball, basketball, netball, golf, tug of war, darts, and athletics.
โThe tournament, running until December 18, is more than just a competition; itโs a celebration of the EACโs 25-year journey of integration,โ noted MP Vincent Mwala.
