13M Cash Found Hidden in Nairobi Slum Sacks

Tuesday, police officers in Gigiri, Nairobi County, discovered Ksh13 million hidden in bags that were believed to be proceeds from drug trafficking.

During the police operation at Kariwa Slums in Ngara, Nairobi County, in addition to the cash, the National Police Service (NPS) stated in a statement that the officers had also seized marijuana substances.

In the operation, 173 pieces of compounded bhang and 42 cartons containing 200 cigarettes each were also seized.

During the search, four suspects were apprehended and brought in to record their statements.

The detectives raided the crime site after receiving information from locals.

With the suspects in detention, the Director of the Anti-Drug Unit has taken over the investigation and will conduct further inquiries.

In response to a rise in reports of drug trafficking and other unlawful activity in the area, police officers have been conducting investigations.

This is even though crime rates in Nairobi continue to rise.
According to data provided by the National Police Service (NPS) for the year ending in December 2021, Nairobi had the highest crime rate with 6,686 incidents, followed by Kiambu (5,715), Meru (5,032), Nakuru (4,281), and Machakos (3,686).

The five jurisdictions were responsible for nearly one-third of all crimes reported during the period under review.

Detectives acting on intelligence leads intercepted a car rushing towards the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in June of this year. Later, it was disclosed that the vehicle was transporting cocaine.

The drug traffickers concealed Ksh 120 million worth of cocaine in white powder packages to avoid detection.

According to a police statement, detectives intercepted the vehicle after obtaining information from Kenyans.
