10K+ Luos Striving for Independent State

Over 10,000 individuals from the Luo community have submitted a petition to the High Court, requesting permission to establish a self-governing and autonomous state.

Ojijo Ogillo Mark Pascal is requesting that the Milimani Law Courts issue an order to the government to arrange a referendum, enabling the Luo community to establish their own independent state.

Ojijo, who introduces himself as a presidential contender and belonging to the Luo ethnic group, asserts that secession isn’t against the law in Kenya. He emphasizes that it’s now the moment for the Luo community, known for their belief in transformative change, to forge their own path.

He claims that the government has consistently employed excessive force against Luo people during protests.

Ojijo additionally claims that resources have been unfairly distributed, resulting in unfavorable treatment towards the Luo community.

“My constitutional right to political, social, cultural, and economic development has been restricted by the state. The State has also used the law and media to paint Luos as evil, against development, and violent,” he said.

“Unless the matter is addressed urgently, the ethnic profiling, discrimination, lack of development and harassment shall continue and these shall prejudice, harm, and limit his right to self-determination.”

In his legal documents, Ojijio is seeking a court directive that would prevent the state from interfering with his pursuit of self-determination actions.

He mentioned that the entitlement to self-determination gives the Luo people the authority to establish freedom-seeking initiatives, grounded in the fundamental principle that communities possess the right to self-governance.
